This book is excellent for people starting in recovery/12 step.
I was intrigued to pick up this book because of vanity: this book is very beautiful and is printed on nice paper and feels great to read. This book was shelved in the "New Age" section of my local bookstore, so I knew going into it that it would contain some "woo". It does, and I don't mind some "woo", but I have too many bones to pick with this book to give it higher than a 3/5 stars.
Let's start with the positives:
1. Snyder is obviously very passionate about Yogananda's teachings and applying these principles in her life. She explains the principles colloquially. Her advice for meditation and life is good and I am applying some of these to my personal meditation practice.
2. This book is excellent for people starting in recovery/12 step.
3. The introduction and Part I and II of this book are the strongest. The last few chapters feel like filler.
4. This book is especially good when considering the journal prompts. I would say these are the best part of the book hands down.
Now the negatives:
1. Snyder's voice rings too strong when I read this book. I personally hate when books are written like a diary or like a blog. Considering this is an influencer book, this voice isn't too prevalent, but still I hate the "you go girl" attitude.
2. I DESPISE when people preach about "passive weight loss" and "detox" through meditation. This is actively harmful to people with eating disorders when they try to reach out for advice on mindfulness and meditation.
3. This book makes a lot of blanket statements concerning science. The way that Snyder simplifies these claims for her personal experience of meditation is weird and should be taken with a grain of salt.
4. This book is not a trauma based approach to meditation. This is a huge component that Snyder could have leaned into.
