Vocabulary and Dialogue for Dating

Today we will learn about Korean dating culture and some phrases. Feel free to ask me questions any time.

소개팅: A meeting set up for two people by their common mutual friend (번호)따기: Getting the phone number from people one finds interest in A relationship starts either by one person obtains the phone number through 번호따기 or 소개팅. 1. If the person is meeting the other person through 소개팅, then there are specific rules to be followed. a. Dress up nicely, unless the two of you decided to go casual over Kakao talk. b. Usually go to a fancy restaurant that you can afford. If you can't then meeting at a named cafe is also an option. c. Usually, men pay for the first meeting so do not pay separate unless the other person wants to. d. Try to understand the other person and figure out what the other person likes and act in that way e. Speak highly of your mutual friends f. If successful obtain a second date and obtain the other person's phone number g. Always thank the friend who set you up wether the 소개팅 went well or not * Please do not do anything that will embarrass your friends since they are usually the ones who set you up. 2. If the person is meeting the other person after receiving the phone number from 번호따기 there are rules to be followed here as well. a. Before the clock strikes 12AM, make sure you at least send them a message b. Just like 소개팅, be ready to go to a fancy cafe or restaurant c. Wear semicasual for the meeting d. Get to know the other person and become slowly comfortable e. If all goes well, then you have a higher chance of becoming a couple than 소개팅 if not then you probably gained a great friend

철수: 안녕하세요, 혹시 영희씨 되시나요? Chulsoo: Hello, would you be Miss Yunghee? 영희: 안녕하세요, 영희입니다. 철수씨 되시나요? 은경이가 철수씨 대하여 많이 이야기해줬어요. Yunghee: Hello, I am Yunghee. Are you Mr. Chulsoo? Yunghee: What do you do for a living? 철수: 저는 삼성 다녀요. 영희씨는 어디서 일하세요? Chulsoo: I work in Samsung. Where do you work? 영희: 저는 하이로컬에서 한국어 가르쳐요. Yunghee: I teach Korean in Hilokal.

철수: 오늘 하루 어떠셨어요? Chulsoo: How was today? 영희: 오늘 하루 힘들었어요. Yunghee: Today was challanging. 철수: 어떤 일로 힘드셨어요? Chulsoo: What made today challanging? 영희: 한국어 가르칠때 영어 쓴다고 혼났어요. Yunghee: I got scolded for using English to teach Korean. 철수: 저런, 학생들이 쉽게 이해할 수 있게 영어 쓰셨는데 그걸 몰라줘서 마음이 많이 힘드셨겠어요. Chulsoo: Oh no, you were trying to help the students by speaking in English. Weren't you very sad the other teachers doesn't understand you? 영희: 그러네요. 철수씨는 오늘하루 어땠어요? Yunghee: It is true. How was your day? 철수: 오늘 하루는 무사히 잘 지나갔어요. 영희씨 맛있는 케이크 먹으니까 기분이 좀 좋아지시나요? Chulsoo: Today went well. Miss Yunghee, are you feeling better after eating some delicious cake? 영희: 네 조금 좋아졌네요. Yunghee: Yes, I feel a bit better. 철수: 그럼 더 기분 좋게 맛있는 음식 먹으러 갈까요? 여기 이탈리아 맛집 있는데 어떠세요? Chulsoo: Then, should we continue by eating delicious food to make you feel better? I heard about a great italian restaurance near here. How does Italian food sound? 영희: 좋아요. Yunghee: Great!

When conversing with the other person, (especially important for men to know) let the other person speak more and feel heard. They will become more comfortable and open up more.

각자 계산할까요? Should we pay separate 철수씨는 좋은 사람 같은데 저랑은 안 맞는 것 같아요. You seem like a good person to me, but I dont think we will match. 시간이 되서 집에 가봐야 될 것 같아요. It's time for me to go home.

곧 또 만날까요? Should we meet soon? 오늘 너무 즐거웠어요. Today was fun! 같이 있으니까 시간이 너무 빨리 갔네요. Time flew by when we were together. 어떤 여자(남자) 좋아하세요? Who do you like? 저희 더 친하게 지내도 될까요? Could we be more closer?

오늘 좋은 하루였네요. Today was a good day. 관심 없어요. I am not interested. 꺼져. Get lost 저랑은 아닌 것 같아요. You were not meant for me. 저 집에 가야 될 것 같아요. I need to go home.

Chulsoo: Would you mind giving me your phone number? 영희: 아니요. 남자친구 있어요 Yunghee: Sorry but no I have a boyfriend.
