The Correct Use of “Having” in English Grammar

✅ Verbs that usually DON'T take "-ing" (or rarely do) 1. Modal verbs – these can’t be used with -ing: Verb ✖ Wrong (with -ing) ✔ Correct can ✖ canning (as a modal) ✔ can could ✖ coulding ✔ could may ✖ maying ✔ may might ✖ mighting ✔ might must ✖ musting ✔ must shall ✖ shalling ✔ shall should ✖ shoulding ✔ should will ✖ willing (as future) ✔ will would ✖ woulding ✔ would Note: “can” can become “canning” but only when it means putting food in cans, not as a modal verb. 2. Some stative (non-action) verbs are rarely used with -ing: These are verbs about feelings, thoughts, or states, not actions. Verb Usually NOT used with -ing know ✖ knowing (rare in modern use) believe ✖ believing (rarely used like this) understand ✖ understanding (sometimes okay in some contexts, but tricky) belong ✖ belonging (only okay when used as a noun: a sense of belonging) own ✖ owning (rarely used) seem ✖ seeming (rare use) need ✖ needing (careful — usually used with “to”) ✅ Example (correct): I know the answer. ✖ Wrong: I am knowing the answer. ❌ 3. Be careful with “to” + verb: If a verb follows "to", we usually use base form, NOT -ing. Sentence Correct? Why? I want to eat. ✔ Correct "to + base verb" I want to eating. ❌ Wrong should be "to eat" But: ✅ I enjoy eating pizza. (some verbs like enjoy DO take -ing) 🔥 Bonus: Adjectives, prepositions, or determiners can’t take -ing These are not verbs, so don’t try to add “-ing” to them. Word ✖ Wrong form ✔ Correct use fast ✖ fasting (unless you mean not eating) ✔ He is fast. some ✖ someing ✔ I need some help. before ✖ beforeing ✔ I came before you.
