Syllable structure

hilokal-notebook-image

Syllable structure Level Not included Language English Topic Phonetics Definition Syllable structure refers to the groupings of sounds within syllables. We describe syllables as potentially consisting of an initial sound (onset), one or more consonants, which are followed by a rhyme/rime, i.e. a vowel (nucleus), and possibly one or more consonants (coda): Notes 1. The identification of elements such as onset, rhyme etc. is justified by the observation that most speakers can easily divide a word such as cat into c-at, and indeed alliteration and rhyme exploit the identification of similar onsets/rhymes. 2.Most books about phonics for primary teachers spell ‘rhyme’ as ‘rime’ in this context, to distinguish it from rhyme in verse.
