Summary of verses 15-22 of Surah An-Nisa:
Verses 23 to 25 of Surah An-Nisa.
This verse outlines a list of women whom Muslim men are prohibited from marrying. This includes mothers, daughters, sisters, paternal and maternal aunts, nieces, foster mothers and sisters, mothers-in-law, step-daughters under specific conditions, and the wives of one's biological sons. Additionally, marrying two sisters simultaneously is also prohibited.
The prohibition extends to women who are already married, except for captives or slaves acquired in war. The verse underscores the importance of seeking relationships with women through marriage rather than illicit means. It also emphasizes the necessity of providing a dowry (mahr) as a gift, ensuring that the relationship is based on mutual consent and lawful means.
Furthermore guidance on marrying believing slave women if one cannot afford to marry free believing women. It highlights that such marriages should be based on mutual consent and should follow the proper Islamic guidelines.
The verse also addresses the need for fairness and kindness towards these women and stipulates that if they commit a sin after marriage, their punishment is half of what is prescribed for free women. This serves to emphasize the principles of justice and compassion in all marital relationships.
These verses collectively emphasize the importance of lawful and respectful marital relationships, the significance of mutual consent, and the maintenance of moral integrity within the community.
