Summary of Chapter No 2 (Surah Al- Baqrah)
Surah Al Baqarah, this is Madani Surah consisting of 286 verses
For the sake of understanding we have divided this Surah into 4 sections
1- Introduction
2- Bani Israeel
3- Middle Nation
4- Conclusions
The first section is mainly covers the characteristics of 3 groups of people
1- Believers
2- Disbelievers
3- Hypocrites
The creation of Adam A.S and his appointment as Khalifah on earth
In the second section Allah describes Bani Israeel's mistakes and Arrogant behavior and their deposition from the status of chosen nation.
In the third section Allah consorts the status to Muslims and gives rules and guidelines to follow
The fourth Section is Conclusions where Allah reminds us of His Might Summarizes the article of faith and teaches us the prayer for grace
First Part – Introduction: Surah Al-Baqarah Verses 1-39
This Surah Begins with the letters Alif Laam Meem called Huruf Muqattuaat their exact meaning known only to Allah there is no doubt in this book and is a guide for those who are mindful of Allah
3 Groups of people are mentioned;
1- Believers
Who believe in the unseen like Allah, Angles, Jannah Jahannum, Qiyamah, establish prayer give zakat and believe in the revelations and have sure faith in the hereafter.
2- Disbelievers
Who persists on their Disbelieves and do not listen to the message (Verse No 7)
3- Hypocrites
Who have 2 faces and spread corruption on earth.
The Disbelievers are challenged to produce a Surah like the Qur'aan but they could not do it Fa'ato Bisooratim'mislih, we cannot deny Allah as He has brought us to life when we were lifeless and He will cause us to die and He will resurrect us.
(Verse No 28)
Story of Adam AS Creation;
Allah created Adam AS and honored him by making the successor on the earth, Allah taught Adam AS the knowledge of the earth.
On the commandment of Allah all the Angels prostrate to Adam AS except Iblees Mal'oon who refused and acted arrogantly and he became the outcast Verse No 34.
Adam AS felt to the temptation of the Iblees and ate the prohibited fruit in Paradise. Adam AS repented immediately and Allah forgave him. Allah sent everyone to earth and said whoever follows the messages from him who will be successful Verse No 38.
The lesson we should be among the first group of people and adopt those qualities and we should learn from the Adam AS the attitude of Humility.
Second Part – Address to Bani Israeel: Verses 40-141
In the next section Allah highlights the favors he bestowed upon Bani Israeel and their arrogant behavior and rebellious attitude. Some of Allah's favor they are honored above others (Wa'Anni Fadhualtukum A'lal Aalameen) save from persecution (Wa'Iz Najjainakum Min Aali Firaoun) Parted sea for them (wa'Iz Faraqna Bikumul Bahr) Forgave after they worshipped cow revealed the Torah (Wa'iz Aataina Musal Kitaba Wal Furqaan) provided food, shade (Wa dhuallalna Alaikumul ghamama Wa Anzalna Alaikumul Manna WasSalwa) and water (Fanjfajarat Minhusnata Ashrata Aina)
Bani Israeel showed extreme arrogance and disobedience when Allah commanded them to sacrifice a cow. Allah took a covenant from them to Worship Him alone be kind to parents, relatives, Orphans, The Needy and always speak kindly to the people stablish prayer and pay zakat they broke the covenant of Allah except a few among them. With the story of Haroot and Maroot were two angels sent by Allah as a test who used to teach magic, Allah highlited Bani Israeel attachment to magic.
Example of Ibraheem AS;
Speaking about Ibraheem AS Allah says verse 131 When Allah ask Ibraheem AS to submit he immediately submit to him. Allah pointed him as a role model for the people, while raising the foundation of the Ka'abah Ibraheem AS and Ismaeel AS made a supplication to raise a messenger that is Prophet Muhammad SAW among the people of Makkah who will recite the ayaat, teach them the book wisdom and purify them All messengers submitted to One GOD and they advised the same to their children. (Verse No 129) Every person will have rewarded of what they earned and they will not be asked about others.
Lesson
Allah narrated the crimes and mistakes of Bani Israeel to warn Muslims not to indulge those mistakes.
Third Part – Middle Nation: Al Baqarah 142-283
Change of Qibla 142-158
This Third section Here Allah changes the Qiblah of the Muslims they are ordered to turn their faces from Bait ul Muqaddas to Makka in prayers the Muslims are given the title of Ummat e Wast which means Middle Nation. As the Middle Nation we are ordered to declare the truth to humanity which is to call people towards righteousness (Islam).
True Righteousness 159-177
We will be tested by Allah through various trials. We should seek comfort in patience and prayer verse No 153.
Allah in Angels curse disbelievers, they are guilty of denying the message that has clear proofs. Verse No 161. There are many signs in the heavens and earth Indicating Tawheed Verse No 164. Allah strongly warns against following our forefathers blindly, we should eat what is lawful and good. Dead Animals Bloods, Wines and any animal that is not slaughtered in the name of Allah are forbidden to eat.
Verse No 177. Righteousness is to believe in Allah, the last day, the angels, the books, the messengers, giving charity stablishing prayer, paying zakah, keeping the pledges and being patience in the suffering and adversity.
The laws for the equal retaliations are set for the case of murder but people can forgive if they wish Verse No 178.
The Quraan is revealed in the month of Ramadhan. All Muslims with some exceptions should fast in this month to increase consciousness of Allah. Allah is near and he respond to our prayers. If we remember Allah, he will remember us.
Verse No 190 Muslims should fight those who wage wars against them and Allah commands not to exceed the limits. It is obligatory to do Hajj and some detailed routes about it are mentioned. Whenever you ask, ask for the best of both worlds, do not only ask for this life. Verse No. 201
Complete Submission and War: 208-218
Enter into islam wholeheartedly and do not follow Shaitans footsteps Verse No 208. Admission into paradise is only after trials and tribulations. Fighting in the sacred months is a great sin but Hindering others from the path of Allah is the greater Sin. Something you do not like might be good for you and something you like may not be good for you.
Social Commandments: 219-242
Allah says; Intoxicants and gambling have great evil in them, marrying polytheists men and women is prohibited, Allah gave some rules about menstruation, Allah will whole accountable only those oaths which are intended in their heart not those which are taking casually.
Allah describe a proper procedure and adequate of divorce and remarriage for women. The recommended period for mothers should feed their offspring is 2 years.
Physical Struggle and Charity: 243-274
Story of bani Israeel when they asked Allah to appoint a king to fight against Jaloot. Allah pointed Taloot as their KingDawood AS killed Jaloot and Allah made Dawood AS a Prophet and a King. Allah raise some messengers or others in rank verse No 253.
The essence of Tawheed is explained in the Ayah called Ayat al Kursi. Charity is highly encouraged. Charity will be increase in reward 700 times or more. If a person shows off or reminds generosity his charity goes waste. Accepted charity is that which is seeks Allah's pleasure, charity should be from the best in the persons earn and not from the workless things.
Shaitan cares to scare people of poverty to stop them for giving charity Verse No 268.
Lesson
We should must not fall into the Shaitans trap and continue giving charity
More Commandments 275-283
Business and Interest are different, Allah permitted business and prohibited interest. Consuming Interest is like waging War against Allah and His Prophet SAW.
Lesson
Dealing with an interest is a Big Sin but the doors of repentance are always open. Allah commands us to be kind while collecting debts. Allah describes in detail the writing and witnessing of a debt contract Verse No 282.
Conculsions Al Baqarah 284-286:
In The Last Section Conclusions 284-286 Allah says: whatever in the heavens and on earth belongs to Allah. Nothing is hidden from him and everything is accounted for. He has full authority to forgive or punish anyone.
The articles of faith are to Believe in Allah, the angels, the books and the messengers We must hear and obey and seek Allah's forgiveness. Allah does not burden anyone more than his or her capacity. In the end Allah teaches us a comprehensive Dua for seeking his forgiveness and grace.
