CHAPTER ONE Plans for an S. S. That can be _your_ job, Scamper.’ ‘그래, 할 수 있다면 너도 하나를 쓰고 싶겠지,’ 자넷이 말하며 윤기 나는 금빛 털을 쓰다듬었다. ‘너는입에 물고 쪽지 하나 배달하면 되겠다. 그게 니 일이야, 스캠퍼.’ ‘What shall we say?’ said Peter, pulling a piece of paper towards him and chewing the end of his pen as he tried to think of words. ‘어떻게 말하지?’ 종이 조각을 자기쪽으로 끌어 당기고 펜 끝을 입으로 질겅거리고 씹으면서 피터가 말했다. ‘Well—we’d better tell them to come here, I think,’ said Janet. ‘We could use the old shed at the bottom of the garden for a meeting-place, couldn’t we? Mummy lets us play there in the winter because it’s next to the boiler that heats the greenhouse, and it’s quite warm.’ ‘음—아이들에게 여기로 오라고 알려야겠지,’ 자넷이 말했다. ‘정원 끝에 있는 오래된 창고를 모임 장소로 사용할 수 있을 거야. 그렇지 않을까? 겨울에는 온실을 데우는 보일러 바로 옆이라서 엄마가 우리 거기서 놀도록 허락해 주시거든, 그리고 꽤 따뜻해.’
