RESTAURANT
How much should I tip at a restaurant? A gratuity of 15 to 20 per cent on top of the bill (before sales tax) is standard, with 25 per cent given for topnotch service. Servers in America work hard for the money – they're generally friendly, knowledgeable and willing to go the extra mile for customers.
Why America has tip culture?
Tipping became the norm in the 1900s. Rumor has it that the practice drifted over from Europe. After their European visits, where tipping was part of the culture, they wanted to seem more cultured and in-the-know than their peers.
What happens if you don't tip in America?

In America, tipping is optional in name only. Legally it's voluntary but if you slink out of a restaurant without leaving a gratuity of between 15 and 25 per cent, you're likely to be chased by a waiter demanding to know why.
