Practice sentences Another way to practice N and NG minimal pairs is through reading sentences. Here are some silly sentences you can get your students to read aloud. 1. The winger was the winner of a thin thing. 2. A puffing puffin flew 2 winged in the wind. 3. The singer-sinner has sung in the sun. 4. Gobbling goblins run up rungs as they pang for pans. 5. There was a clang as the clan began coughing on the coffin. 6. The Hun hung the king’s kin.

1. n: No need to light a night light on a light night like tonight. 2. ng: The ringing, swinging, singing singers sang winning songs. 3. n & ng: Do not hang the ring thing next to the wrong thong.

SOUND ARTICULATION

N To make the /n/ sound, place the tip of your tongue just behind your teeth as you lower your jaw a bit, leaving a small gap between your teeth. In this position, your mouth is all set to start producing /n/’s! NG To make this sound, lift the back of your tongue against the soft palate, which is the soft area at the very back of the roof of your mouth, forming a seal. Then make a sound with your vocal cords. Since you have closed off your mouth, the air travels through your nose, creating the /ng/ sound.
