negative expressions 1. - 지 않다 (negative sentence ending) 2. - 안 (before a verb) 지 않다: to make a sentence negative, we add 지 to the verb stem, following with 않다 (not conjugated) present tense: 지 않아요 past tense: 지 않았어요 ex) 가다 = to go 가지 않아요 = (i) don’t go. 가지 않았어요 = (i) didn’t go. 먹다 = to eat 먹지 않아요 = (i)don’t eat. 먹지 않았어요 = (i)didn’t eat. 자다 = to sleep 자지 않아요 = (i) don’t sleep. 자지 않았어요 (i) didn’t sleep. 안: the negative 안 is an abbreviation of 아니, which takes the meaning of “no”. Just simply add 안 before the verb or adjective stem. This version is simpler because you do not have to worry about tenses. ex) 가다 안 가요 먹다 안 먹어요 자다 안 자요 practice: 1. 이 가방은 무겁습니다. = this luggage is heavy. 2. 한국어는 어렵다. = korean is difficult. 3. 저는 슬펐어요. = i am feeling sad. 4.
