Definition of modal verb grammar. : a verb (such as can, could, shall, should, ought to, will, or would) that is usually used with another verb to express ideas such as possibility, necessity, and permission.

Note: The word 'will' is generally used as a modal verb, but it can also be used as a noun. 'Would' is also a modal verb and is the past tense of will. Another difference between 'will' and 'would' is that 'will' is used in statements that refer to the future while 'would' is used to refer events to the past.

Note: Won't has to do with intent. Wouldn't has to do with caution or may even be used for an imaginary situation.

Note: Would is used to talk about a possible or imagined situation, and is often used when that possible situation is not going to happen. Should is used to say that something is the proper or best thing to do, or to say that someone ought to do something or must do something.
