A Bengali polymath who reshaped Bengali literature, music, and Indian art with Contextual Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Rabindranath Tagore became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. Born in Calcutta in 1861 to parents Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi, he was raised mostly by servants. The Tagore family was at the forefront of the Bengali Renaissance. They were regular hosts of the publication of literary magazines, theatre, and recitals of Bengali and Western classical music. Tagore avoided classroom schooling and loathed formal education. He married Mrinalini Devi in 1883 with whom he had five children, two of whom died in childhood. Tagore's Sadhana period (1891-1895), named after one of his magazines, was his most productive. He wrote more than half the stories of the three-volume, 84-story Galpaguchchha in these years. Its ironic and grave tales examined the voluptuous poverty of an idealised rural Bengal. He moved to Santiniketan in 1901 to found an ashram with a marble-floored prayer hall The Mandir an experimental school, groves of trees, gardens, a library. He lost his wife and two children there. In 1905, his father also died. Tagore published Naivedya (1901) and Kheya (1906), and translated poems into free verse. He gained Bengali and foreign readers alike. The English Gitanjali or Song Offerings, a collection of 103 poems which he himself translated from Bengali was published by the Indian Society of London in November 1912. Tagore won the Nobel Prize in Literature in November 1913. The British Crown granted Tagore a knighthood in 1915. He took a sheaf of his translated works to England in 1912, where they gained attention from missionary and Gandhi protégé Charles F. Andrews, Irish poet William Butler Yeats, Ezra Pound, Robert Bridges, Ernest Rhys, Thomas Sturge Moore, and others. In the same year, Yeats wrote the preface to the English translation of Gitanjali and Andrews joined Tagore at Santiniketan. He lectured in Japan and the United States from May 1916 to April 1917 and denounced Nationalism. His essay 'Nationalism in India' was scorned and praised. Tagore is known mostly for his poetry, though he wrote novels, essays, short stories, travelogues, dramas, and thousands of songs. His works are noted for their rhythmic, optimistic, and lyrical nature. Tagore wrote autobiographies and his non-fiction grappled with history, linguistics, and spirituality. His travelogues, essays, and lectures were compiled into several volumes. Harvard University Press collaborated with Visva-Bharati University to publish The Essential Tagore, the largest anthology of Tagore's works available in English, in 2011. It marks the 150th anniversary of Tagore's birth. A prolific composer of music, Tagore had 2,230 songs to his credit. Known as rabindrasangit (Tagore Song), they merge fluidly into his literature, most of which-poems or parts of novels, stories, or plays alike were lyricised.
