1. I know. I know you are busy working a 9–5 job or studying for your college finals. I get it. But if you have any interest whatsoever in making your life just slightly easier for yourself and for the ones around you, you’ll consider reading the book I’m about to mention. Some things in life aren’t taught in school or college, but dramatically affect us in our daily lives. Things that aren’t completely intuitive — at least not in the way that we’re conditioned to think. Which is why this gem of a book is of paramount importance. The name of the book is Emotional Intelligence, by Daniel Goleman. 2. Why This Book? Before getting into what this book outlines, let me tell you why Emotional Intelligence is a must-read. Most of us are fools, emotionally. Let that sink in. We’re poor at handling our own emotions, let alone understanding and interpreting others in relationships, we struggle to reason why we’re feeling a particular way and even when we do know, we fail to think pragmatically to alleviate ourselves of our negative thoughts. But this book changes that. Goleman’s work is based on years of research into psychology, neuroscience, and behavioral science, and provides reliable, practical advice for personal growth. Aside from personal growth and self-help, the concepts illustrated in the book can be applied to many different fields, including education, leadership, and business. 3. A Brief Outline In this book, Goleman posits that emotional intelligence is a key factor in personal and professional success, and it can be developed and improved through practice and learning. There are 5 main components of Emotional Intelligence, according to the book, which are: 4. Self-awareness: the ability to recognize and understand one’s own emotions, strengths, and weaknesses. Self-regulation: the ability to manage one’s own emotions, impulses, and behaviors in a way that is appropriate and adaptive. 5. Motivation: the drive to achieve goals, persist in the face of challenges, and pursue one’s interests and passions. Empathy: the ability to recognize and understand the emotions of others, and to respond in a way that shows care and concern. Social skills: the ability to build and maintain relationships, communicate effectively, work collaboratively, and lead others. 6. These components are undoubtedly some of the most foundational and essential skills required in work, business, communication, relationships, and of course, personal growth. On the path of self-improvement, this book can be considered as the foundation and a great starting point. The power of the 352 pages in this book is more than profound.
