J and Z sound
Z vs. J Sound in English
1. How They Sound
Z = /z/
Like the sound of a buzzing bee 🐝 (zzz)
Examples: zebra, zoo, easy, busy
Continuous: You can hold the sound zzzzzz.
J = /ʤ/
Like a soft "ch" sound mixed with a "d" → dzh
Examples: jump, jacket, major, juice
Quick: You cannot hold it. It starts and stops.
2. Mouth & Tongue Position
Z (/z/):
Tongue close to the roof of the mouth, just behind the teeth.
Air flows smoothly.
Vocal cords vibrate.
Try saying: ssss → zzzz.
J (/ʤ/):
Tongue touches the roof of the mouth (like when you say d).
Then you release with a “zh” sound.
Short and strong burst.
Try saying: d + zh = j.
3. Minimal Pairs (Practice Words)
Say each pair slowly, then faster:
zoo – Jew
zip – jip
zeal – Jill
Zane – Jane
maze – mage
4. Practice Sentences

Jane is my friend.
