Grammar -은지/-는지 알다

Adjective -은지 알다 or verb -는지 알다 is used to express something that one knows. They are used with 언제, 어디, 누구, 무엇, 어떻게, 왜, 몇 and have the same meaning as "(someone) knows when/where/who/what/how/why/how much..."

Adjective Stem with consonant ending - 은지 알다 높다 -> 높 + 은지 알다 -> 높은지 알다 설악산이 얼마나 높은지 아세요? Do you know how high is mountain seorak? Stem with vowel ending -ㄴ지 알다 아프다 -> 아프 + ㄴ지 알다 -> 아픈지 알다 미나 씨가 어디가 아픈지 아세요? | 배가 아프다고 했어요. Do you know where mina feels hurt? | She said her stomach hurts.

Verb and 있다/없다 --> -는지 알다 찾다 -> 찾 + 는지 알다 -> 찾는지 알다 소라 씨가 지금 뭐 찾는지 아세요? Do you know what mina is looking for right now? 좋아하다 -> 좋아하 + 는지 알다 -> 좋아하는지 알다 앤디 씨가 무슨 운동을 제일 좋아하는지 아세요? Do you know what sport andy likes the most? 없다 -> 없 + 는지 알다 -> 없는지 알다 내일 왜 수업이 없는지 아세요? | 글쎄요. 선생님한테 물어보세요. Do you know why there is no class tomorrow? | Im not sure. Ask teacher.

Irregular ㄹ Remove the final consonant ㄹ 살다 -> 사 + 는지 알다 -> 사는지 알다(verb) 멀다 -> 머 + ㄴ지 알다 -> 먼지 알다(adj) Irregular ㅂ Change the final consonant ㅂ to 우 덥다 -> 더우 + ㄴ지 알다 -> 더운지 알다(adj)

Past tense Stem with ㅏ, ㅗ vowel ending -> -았는지 알다 가다 -> 가 + 았는지 알다 -> 갔는지 알다 제니 씨가 언제 집에 갔는지 아세요? Do you know when Jenny went home? Stem with other vowel ending -> -었는지 알다 울다 -> 울 + 었는지 알다 -> 울었는지 알다 레인 씨가 무엇 때문에 울었는지 아세요? Do you know what made lien cry? 하다 -> 했는지 알다 조금 전에 누가 전화했는지 아세요? Do you know who called just now?

Noun이다 --> -인지 알다 학생 -> 학생 + 인지 알다 -> 학생인지 알다 가수 -> 가수 + 인지 알다 -> 가수인지 알다

BONUS To express something that one does not know -은지/-는지 모르다 is used. 앤디 씨가 방에서 뭐 해요? | 글쎄요. 뭐 하는지 몰라요. What is andy doing in his room? | Im not sure. I don't know what he is doing. -은지, -는지 can be used also with 잊어버리다, 생각나다, 물어보다, 말하다, 이야기하다, etc. 그 사진을 어디에 놓았는지 잊어버렸어요. I forgot where i put that picture. 이거 한국말로 어떻게 말하는지 선생님한테 물어봅식다.
