Grammar -은/는 편이다
-은/는 편이다
Is used when some fact is close to or on a certain side instead of talking about it as definite.
Therefore you can say "민수 씨는 큰 편이에요." If you think Minsu is tall. It means "minsu is in on the tall side" or "minsu is quite tall".
📝 Restrictions on use
-은/는 편이다 is not used when some situation or fact is clear and definite to everyone.
그 사람은 한국 사람이니까 당연히 한국어를 잘하는 편이에요 ❌
Because that person is Korean so definitely he/she speaks Korean quite well.
그 사람은 한국 사람이니까 당연히 한국어를 잘해요 ✅
Because that person is Korean so she/he definitely speaks Korean well.

WHEN -은/는 편이다 is used with a verb, an adverb like '자주, 많이, 잘' must be used
➡️ 나는 매운 음식을 '잘' 먹는 편이다.
I eat spicy food quite well.

Both -은/는 편이었다 and -은 편이다 can be used when expressing something in the past.
✨-은/는 편이었다
is used when explaining a general situation in the past
➡️ 어렸을 때 나는 키가 작은 편이었다.
When i was little my height was on the small side/quite small.
➡️ 고등학교 때 나는 공부를 잘하는 편이었다.
When i was in high school i studied quite well.
✨ -은 편이다
is used when explaining some event completed at a point in the past.
A: 어제 시험 잘 봤어?
How was your exam yesterday?
B: 잘 본 편이야. 별로 어렵지 않았어.
I did quite well. It wasn't difficult.
