Page number -1 Are they just hallucinations? By reading all this on appartitions of the dead, almost invariably, someone will get to his feet, and usually looking either frightened or indignant will say, "Yeah, I've heard about all this stuff. It's just hallucinations!" It would be comfortingly easy to explain such experiences as hallucinations, or the figments of an overworked imagination. But this would be dishonest, for there are serious flaws in the hallucination theory. What are they? To begin with seeing apparitions of the dead turns out to be an extremely "democratic" phenomenon. It these experiences happened only to occultists or spiritualists, they could be readily dismissed. Instead, the vast majority of those who see appartitions are perfectly ordinary people. In fact, about the only thing they seem to have in common is their normality, and it is rare for a witness to state that he has had more than one or two such experiences in his entire lifetime. Furthermore, the great majority of witnesses are in a state of normal health, physically and emotionally. But how about their state of mind just before the experience? Hardly any report anything in any way unusual in the way of shock, stress, or elation; virtually all were in a perfectly ordinary frame of mind. But surely they were expecting something peculiar to happen? Again, no. The experience was totally unexpected, occurred in familiar surroundings, and "burst in" on them while they were going about their daily business. And there are so many of them-one in every four people has had an experience which convinced him that he was in contact with someone who was dead!
