What is a euphemism? A euphemism is an appropriate expression used in the place of a phrase or words that may be found inappropriate or offensive. Euphemisms are commonly used in daily language and literature to replace language that some may find displeasing.

prison - correctional facility

lie; be untruthful - economical with the truth

homeless - on the streets

Garbage collector - sanitation worker

bald - thin on the top

old person - senior citizen; retiree

euthanize - put to sleep (usually an animal)

abortion - pregnancy termination

used or second-hand - pre-owned

cheap - economical

poor country - developing country

short person - vertically challenged

criminal (young) - juvenile delinquent

drugs - illegal substances

dumb - not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Euphemisms for something bad: -It wasn’t up to scratch. -It left a lot to be desired. -That was a questionable idea. -Meh

Euphemisms for money and career: -Bringing home the bacon -Breadwinner -Living comfortably

Euphemisms for death: -Passed on -Kicked the bucket -Is in a better place

1.She’s not sick; she’s “under the weather.” 2.He’s not a liar; he’s “creative with the truth.” 3.They’re not in a sexual relationship; they’re “friends with benefits.” 4. I am not going to the toilet; I am going to go "powder my nose." 5.She didn’t break up with him; she “needed some space.”

6. You’re not fired; you’re being “let go.” 7.He’s not deceased; he’s “sleeping with the fishes.” 8.It’s not a tiny cramped apartment; it’s “cozy.” 9.They didn’t get a divorce; they “consciously uncoupled.” 10.He didn’t say the f-word; he said “oh, fudge.”
