"Diphthong” comes from the Greek word diphthongs. It literally means “having two sounds.” More specifically, diphthongs deal with vowels.

Diphthongs contain two vowels that form one new sound when combined together. Examples of Diphthong vowels are: aw”/“au” “oy”/“oi” “ow”/“ou.
