Tips for Describing Photos for English Exams 1) Learn directions for photos: In the upper left corner In the upper right corner In the bottom left corner In the bottom right corner In the foreground In the background On the right On the left 2) Give a simple, 1 or 2 sentence summary what's in the photo. Talk about the place - learn the names of different locations. 3) Describe what is happening (remember to use -ing verbs) Are there people? Describe what they are doing (jobs, roles, etc), what they are wearing, 4) Learn phrases for guessing : I suppose that... , I guess that... , perhaps.... , i'm not sure but probably... , 5) Learn to deal with unfamiliar vocabulary She is holding scissors = she is holding a tool for cutting paper 6) If you get stuck for more than a moment, go back to something more general - "zoom out"

This is a picture of a person who appears to be underground, or next to a wall. In the bottom left corner there is a person sitting next to a fire. There is a ladder going from the bottom right side to the upper right side. At the top of the photo, there’s the sky. It looks like some parts of the ladder are missing. I guess that the person is stuck underground, because they cannot use the ladder to climb out. It seems like the person is using the wood from the ladder to provide fuel for the fire. The fire could symbolize a person’s basic requirements for survival (example: staying warm, cooking food, etc.) If the person didn’t have to use the wood to keep the fire lit, he/she would be able to climb the ladder. Perhaps the ladder symbolizes the opportunities to plan for a better future (i.e. climbing the ladder to get out of the hole). So, in summary, this picture describes how the poorest people in society struggle to improve their lives, because they are so busy trying to simply survive from day to day.
