Beginner Korean with Scott: Korean Alphabet
Today's Agenda
1. 2 minute presentation
2. Review the Korean alphabet and how to form words in Korean
Korean Alphabet: 한글 (Hangul)
한글 (Hangul) was created by King Sejeong the Great in 1443 to help the common people read and write. Before the creation of 한글, Korean was writtenin 한자 (hanja) which were Chinese characters.
한글 (Hangul) is made up of consonents and vowels.
Consonents depict the position of the mouth, tongue, and throat when pronouncing the words (Picture 1).
The consonents and vowels by themselves cannot form a word.
Making Korean Words
Korean words are made up of a consonent and a vowel.
Example: ㄴ(n) + ㅏ(a) = 나(na)
Exceptions
1. Sometimes we use double consonents instead of single consonents to form a word
ㄲ(kk) + ㅏ(a) = 까(kka)
2. We can also use compound vowels instead of single vowels to form a word
ㄴ(n) + ㅔ(eh) = 네(neh)
3. Finally, we can use a consonent, vowel and consonent to form a word. The last consonent is called 받침 (batchim)
ㄱ(g) + ㅏ(a) + ㅁ(m) = 감(gam)
