Beginner English: The Adjectives Review

🥳THE ADJECTIVES  REVIEW🥳 Adjectives - words that clarify(make clear) a noun/give us further information about a noun. There are many types of adjectives. But in this table we have discussed determiners which precede (come before), the order of adjectives and three main types of adjectives namely: 1. Comparative 2. Superlative 3. Descriptive 🏹 DETERMINERS ☆ They are not adjectives. ☆ They are placed before nouns to introduce them to listeners/the audience. ☆ They include: 1. Articles (a, an, the) Indefinite articles- point out class of nouns in a sentence. "a" is used with consonants e.g. a bicycle, a television, a laptop. "an" is used with vowels e.g. an apple, an umbrella. Exceptions: ¤ "an" is used before a silent or unsounded "h" e.g. an honourable man, an honest mistake. ¤When"u" makes the same sound as "y" or "o" makes the same sound as "w", use "a". an union❌ a union✅ an one-man army❌ a one-man army an used tissue❌ a used tissue✅ Definitive article - refers to a particular (specific) noun in a  sentence. "the" e.g. The cat is on the kitchen table. 2. Quantifiers (a few, enough, many, much, a little, most, some, any, etc.) ☆ use "of" between a quantifier and other determiners e.g  She knows some of my friends 3. Demonstratives (tell the listener about the position or location of the noun from the speakers point of view) This = singular, near These = plural, far That = singular, far Those = plural, near e.g. This laptop is mine. These cookies are delicious. That car is green. Those boats belong to my uncle. 4. Possessives (my, mine, our, his, hers and their) 5. Interrogatives (what, whose, which) 👥 COMPARATIVE ☆ Comes from the word "compare" which means to test or examine the similarity between one object and another. ☆Formation: 1 Syllable adjective (+er + than) e.g. John's car is larger than my car. 2+ Syllables adjective (+more + er) Mary is more intelligent than Sasha. 🧖‍♂️😇 SUPERLATIVE ☆ Compares more than two things. ☆Formation: 1 Syllable (the + adjective + -est -) e.g. John's car is the largest. 2+ Syllables (the most + adjective ) e.g. Mary is the most intelligent girl in class. ✒🖌DESCRIPTIVE Used to describe a thing. E.g. small, beautiful, sizable, attractive ☆ It has different word endings according to the prefix/suffix rules. 🚔🚨 ORDER OF ADJECTIVES - It is the way a sentence (with adjectives) to allow the speaker to covey the correct meaning to the audience/listener. 🔢 Number/Quantity e.g. whole, half, several, A lot, A few, many, three, 100, etc 💡Opinion e.g  tasty, strong, ugly, costly, stubborn, etc 📏Size e.g. small, little, petite, big, gigantic, etc 🔞Age e.g. young, old, ancient, adolescent, youth, 14 years old, adult, child 💠Shape e.g. square, round, skinny, triangular, etc 🌈 Colour e.g. black, yellow, blue, etc 🌍Origin e.g. British, Chinese, Korean, American, etc 👩‍🏭 Material e.g. wooden, woollen, silk, nylon, plastic, aluminium, etc 🔄Purpose e.g. writing (paper), dress shoes (formal dinners), clothes pin (hanging clothes on a line), postage stamp (stamp for sending letters), etc
