Basic Korean Conversations

Today we are going to focus on some school or university setting topics.

How do we say 1. What have you been doing lately? 2. What are you doing here? 3. Since when have you liked IU? Lets practice using these phrases by doing some short conversation. Helpful vocabulary 공부: study 운동: exercise 음악: music 일: work 시청하다: to watch 노래하다: to sing 잠자다: to sleep 쉬다: to rest

1. 요즘 뭐하고 지내요? (formal) 요즘 뭐하고 지내? (informal) 2. 여기서 뭐하세요? (formal) 여기서 뭐해? (informal) * please be careful of intonation here. Bad intonation will cause this phrase to be an aggressive phrase 3. 언제부터 아이유 좋아하셨어요? (formal) 언제부터 아이유 좋아했어? (informal)

Thank you for allocating your time. 찰스: 안녕하세요. 잘 부탁드립니다. Charles: Hello, take good care of us. 철수: 혹시 이번 조별과제의 주제를 무엇으로 정할까요? Chulsoo: What would you like to do for the subject of this group project? 영희: 모르겠네요. 어떤 주제로 할까요? Yunghee: Unfortunately, I do not know. Chulsoo: Yes, please. Also, Charles would you mind making the presentation material? 찰스: 네 알겠어요. 금요일까지 피피티 만들어서 보내드릴께요. Chalres: All right. I will send you the powerpoint presentation by Friday 철수: 그럼 저는 받은 발표자료로 발표하겠습니다. 그럼 발표때 봬요! Chulsoo: I will present with the sent presentation material. See you at presentation!

Like many schools worldwide, most schools in Korea have one or two projects that at least three people have to work together. The goal of these project is to grow intrapersonal skills and group mentality. Usually, the choice for presentation topic is broad if it falls within the material of the subejct. Note: There will be some group members who would like to bandwagon and not input any effort. Trying to keep them from getting a mark is a stressful journey indeed.

Yunghee: Yes, we had homework. 교수님: 여러분 잘 주무셨어요? 오늘 배울 문학은 고전 영국문학인 <베이오울프>입니다. Professor: Hello everyone, did you sleep well? Today we will read the old British literature called Beowulf. 철수: 아 맞다. 교수님께서 <베이오울프> 읽고 오라고 하셨지? Chulsoo: Ah right! The professor told us to read Beowulf did he not? 영희: 야, 조용히해! 집중안되잖아. Yunghee: Hey keep quiet I cannot concentrate. 교수님: 다음주에 쪽지시험 있습니다! Professor: Next week, we will have a quiz. 철수: 아 반이 지루하네. 영희야 게임하자. Chulsoo: Man, the class is boring. Yunghee lets play a game. 영희: 아 싫어! Yunghee: No I dont want to. 교수님: 철수학생, 영희학생 강의 끝나고 봐요. Professor: Chulsoo and Yunghee see me after class.

For titles of books, plays and movies, English will use italics to denote them. In Korean, we use <______> to denote the title of the books, plays and movies.

교수님: 학생 여러분 안녕하세요? Professor: Hello students, how are you? 모두: 안녕하세요 교수님. Everyone: Hello professor. 교수님: 다들 오늘 시험 준비 잘 하셨죠? Professor: Everyone is prepared for the exam today? 철수: 수아야 오늘 시험 있었어? Chulsoo: Sua did we have a test today? 수아: 이 바보야 오늘 물리 시험이잖아! 공부 안했어? Soo Ah: You idiot, we have a test in physics today! You didn't study? 철수: 당연히 공부는 했지. 근데 물리만 안했지. Chulsoo: Of course I did study; but not physics. 수아: 컨닝할 생각하지 말아. Soo Ah: Don't think about cheating. 교수님: 자 그럼 다들 조용하고 시험 시작하죠. 조교님 시험지 나눠주세요. Professor: Let's settle down and start the test. Teaching assistant please pass out the papers.

Depending on the university you go to, you can have a written test or a group project that counts as a test. Usually, all the teaching assitances are there to check on students conducting academic dishonesty. Depending on the professor, the exam can be doable or the exam can be very difficult. Professors who know that their test is difficult would likely add participation scores to the test grade.
