~rather than....it's more correct/accurate to say...(rather than A,I think B is a more accurate way to put/say it)
*보다 is used to compare things "Than" or "compared to"
*기 is used to turn verb into noun form
*는 is commonly added to emphasize the contrast between two descriptions.Can be omitted.
하기 싫다기보다는 시간이 안 될 거 같아요 It's not really that I don't want to do it but I don’t think I'll have time(to do it)
어렵다기보단 시간이 오래 걸려요 rather being difficult,it's more accurate to say it is time consuming (vice versa)
일이라기보단 취미예요 It's more a hobby rather than (calling it) a job
하고 싶어서 하다기보다 해야 해서/하니까 하는 거죠 I don't necessarily do it because I "want to" do it but because because I "have to" do it.
Commonly used structures:
There are some words and phrases that are often used in conjunction with this grammar to make the meaning of the sentence more clear.
1.꼭 + ㄴ/는/다기보다 or 이라기보다
꼭 means "must,specifically,w/o fail" in this structure.It adds the meaning of "not necessarily"
~꼭 제 말이 맞는다기보단 이런 부분도 생각하는 겨.I'm not necessarily saying I'm right but I'm just suggesting we should think of this aspect/part too.
2.ㄴ/는/다기보단 or 이/라기보단 + 에 가깝다
~일이라기보단 취미에 가깝다 it's more closer to hobby rather than calling it a work/job.
3. 딱히 +ㄴ/는/다기보단 or 이라기보단
When combined with a negative sentence or meaning,딱히 means "not particularly/not specifically"
~딱히 하기 싫다기보단 "안" 해도 될 거 같다는 말입니다 I'm not specifically saying that I "don't want to do it" but that I feel like I "don't have to do it."
4.ㄴ/는/다기보단 or 이/라기보단 + 그냥...
~저는 스키를 잘 탄다기보단 그냥 좋아해요
I'm not really good at skiing but it's more accurate to say I "just" like it
5.ㄴ/는/다기보단 or 이/라기보단 +은/ㄴ/는/인/을/ㄹ 것 같아요
~그 사람은 엄청 미남이라기보단 특별한 매력이 있는 거 같아요 Rather than being incredibly handsome,I "think" that man has his own special charm
6.ㄴ/는/다기보단 or 이/라기보단 + (으)ㄴ/는 편이에요
~그 사람 머리가 좋다기보단 노력을 많이 하는 편이에요 Rather than being smart ,he tends to work hard/do his best
