Arbitrament- the right or power of deciding ar·​bit·​ra·​ment (är-ˈbi-trə-mənt) 1. We must work toward a society in which the arbitrament of force is fully replaced with the arbitrament of the legal system. 2. Arbitrament is the judgment given by an arbitrator.

Arbitrary- ar·​bi·​trary (ˈär-bə-ˌtrer-ē ) existing or coming about seemingly at random or by chance or as a capricious and unreasonable act of will. 1. An arbitrary number has been assigned to each district. 2. Although arbitrary arrests are illegal, they continue to occur in many parts of the country. 3. The rules seemed arbitrary and inflexible.

Arcane- secret or difficult to understand ar·​cane (är-ˈkān) 1. This argument may seem arcane to those not closely involved in the world of finance. 2. A guard escorted me through the factory floor, crowded with huge, arcane machines that looked like prehistoric monsters. 3. To amuse themselves, the two brothers invented an arcane language that only they could understand.

Archaic- Antiquated or very old ar·​cha·​ic (är-ˈkā-ik) 1. I was irritated by his use of archaic idiom. 2. These archaic practices are advocated by people of limited outlook. 3. Because my archaic computer is no longer useful to me, I am giving it away for free.

Archetype- a very typical example of a certain person or thing. ar·​che·​type (ˈär-ki-ˌtīp) 1. She is the archetype of an American movie star. 2. He is the archetype of a successful businessman. 3. Old Mr. Duff is the archetype of the elderly British gentleman.

Archipelago- a chain or group of islands ar·​chi·​pel·​a·​go (är-kə-ˈpe-lə-ˌgō ) 1. parts of the archipelago have been a little overwhelmed by tourism. 2. She has explored seas and archipelagoes which had no chart, where no Cook or Vancouver had ever sailed. 3. The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago of eight major islands, several atolls, and numerous smaller islets in the North Pacific Ocean.

Archives- collection of historical documents or records ar·​chives (ˈär-ˌkīvs) 1. These old photographs should go in the family archives. 2. The programme is preserved in the BBC sound archives.

Ardent- passionate or enthusiastic ar·​dent (ˈär-dᵊnt) 1. My old father's an ardent royalist so I may give it to him. 2. When the rock star checks his mail, he almost always finds one or two bizarre gifts from some of his ardent fans. 3. He is an ardent lover of poetry.

Ardor- passion ar·​dor (ˈär-dər ) 1. In his ardor and enthusiasm he became separated from his patrol while following another enemy far beyond the lines. 2. I could not take my gaze off that beautiful face, which was all aflame with the ardor of love.

Arduous- marked by great labor or effort ar·​du·​ous (ˈär-jə-wəs) 1. We wish him well in his arduous task. 2. That is an arduous task for anyone to undertake. 3. Last semester was a piece of cake, but taking seven classes along with an internship this semester is going to be arduous!
