CHAPTER IX. THE MOCK TURTLE'S STORY. "You can't think how glad I am to see you again, you dear old thing!" said the Duchess, as she tucked her arm affectionately into Alice's, and they walked off together. 제9장 모조 거북이의 이야기 “다시 봐서 정말 기쁘구나, 사랑스러운 얘야!" 공작 부인(미망인)은 이렇게 말하며 다정하게 앨리스의 팔짱을 끼고 함께 걸어갔어요. Soup does very well without-- “내가 공작부인이라면 말야,” 앨리스는 혼자말을 했어요. (그렇지만, 희망적인 말투는 아니었다.) “난 우리 집 부엌에는 후추를 두지 않을 거야, 스프는 후추를 넣지 않아도 맛이 있잖아, Maybe it's always pepper that makes people hot-tempered," she went on, much pleased at having found out a new kind of rule, "and vinegar that makes them sour-and camomile that makes them bitter-and-and barley sugar and such things that make children sweet-tempered. Alice did not much like her keeping so close to her: first, because the Duchess was very ugly, and secondly, because she was exactly the right height to rest her chin on Alice’s shoulder, and it was an uncomfortably sharp chin. It means much the same thing,” said the Duchess, digging her sharp little chin into Alice’s shoulder as she added, “and the moral of that is- ‘Take care of the sense, and the sounds will take care of themselves.” “아, 그래! 내 말이 거의 같은 뜻이야.” 공작부인은 말을 덧붙일 때 마다 자신의 뾰족하고 작은 턱으로 앨리스의 어깨를 콕콕 찔러 가며 말했어요, “그럼 그 말의 교훈은 .. ‘감각에 집중하라, 그러면 소리들은 저절로 따라올 것이다.’ 이겠구나.” “How fond she is of finding morals in things!” Alice thought to herself. “정말 이분은 모든 것들에서 교훈(속담)들을 찾아내는 것을 좋아하나봐.” 앨리스는 속으로 생각했어요. "I dare say you're wondering why I don't put my arm round your waist," the Duchess said after a pause: “아마도 왜 내가 너의 허리에 팔을 두르지 않는지 궁금할 꺼야?” 공작부인은 잠시 말을 하지 않다가 다시 말을 꺼냈습니다. "the reason is, that I'm doubtful about the temper of your flamingo. Shall I try the experiment?" “그 이유는, 네가 데리고 있는 홍학의 성미가 두렵기 때문이야. 시험 삼아 해 볼까?” "He might bite," Alice cautiously replied, not feeling at all anxious to have the experiment tried. “홍학이 부리로 물지도 몰라요,” 앨리스는 신중하게 대답했지만, 시험 삼아 팔을 둘러도 전혀 상관이 없었어요. "Very true," said the Duchess: "flamingoes and mustard both bite. "Right, as usual," said the Duchess: "what a clear way you have of putting things!" “맞아, 늘 그렇듯이,” 공작 부인이 말했어요. “정말 명확하게 설명을 잘 하는구나!” “It’s a mineral, I think,” said Alice. “머스타드는 광물인것 같아요.” 라고 앨리스가 말했어요. “Of course it is,” said the Duchess, who seemed ready to agree to everything that Alice said; “네 말이 맞아,” 공작 부인은 앨리스가 말하는 모든 말에 동의하고 싶은 모양이었어요. “there’s a large mustard-mine near here. And the moral of that is - ‘The more there is of mine, the less there is of yours.’” “이 근처에 커다란 머스타드 광산이 하나 있어. 이 말의 가르침은 ‘내 것이 더 많아 질수록, 너의 것이 더 적어진다.’ 라는 거야. “Oh, I know!” exclaimed Alice, who had not attended to this last remark, “it’s a vegetable. Come on!" “거북이에게 슬픈 일이 없다는 거 알잖아. 이리와!” “No” said Alice. “I don’t even know what a Mock turtle is.” “아니요, 전 가짜 거북이가 뭔지도 모르는데요.”라고 앨리스가 말했어요. “It’s the thing Mock Turtle Soup is made from,” said the Queen. “그건 모조 거북이 스프를 만드는 재료란다.” 여왕이 말했어요. “I never saw one, or heard of one,” said Alice. “저는 전혀 듣지도 보지도 못했어요.” 앨리스는 말했어요. “Come on, then,” said the Queen, “and he shall tell you his history.” “그럼, 이리 와 보렴, 모조 거북이가 자기 얘기를 들려줄 거야.” 여왕이 말했어요. As they all walked together, Alice heard the King say in a low voice, to the company generally, “You are all pardoned.” 그들이 함께 걸어가는데, 앨리스는 왕이 낮은 목소리로 백성들에게 이야기하는 소리를 들었어요. “너희들 모두 사면되었다.” “Come, that’s a good thing!” she said to herself, for she had felt quite unhappy at the number of executions the Queen had ordered. “와, 잘 됐네!” 앨리스는 혼자말을 했어요. 왜냐하면 앨리스는 여왕이 사형 선고를 내린 피고인들의 수가 많아 기분이 아주 안 좋았거든요.

“I quite agree with you,” said the Duchess, “and the moral of that is-’Be what you would seem to be’ -or, if you’d like it put more simply- ’Never imagine yourself not to be otherwise than what it might appear to others that what you were or might have been was not otherwise than what you had been would have appeared to them to be otherwise.’ “ “I think I should understand that better,” Alice said very politely, “if I had it written down: but I can’t quite follow it as you say it.” “That’s nothing to what I could say if I chose,” the Duchess replied, in a pleased tone. “Pray don’t trouble yourself to say it any longer than that.” said Alice. “Oh, don’t talk about trouble!” said the Duchess. “I make you a present of everything I’ve said as yet.” “A cheap sort of present!” thought Alice. “I’m glad they don’t give birthday presents like that!”

But she did not venture to say it out loud. “Thinking again?” the Duchess asked, with another dig of her sharp little chin. “I’ve a right to think,” said Alice sharply, for she was beginning to feel a little worried. “Just about as much right,” said the Duchess, “as pigs have to fly, and the m-” But here, to Alice’s great surprise, the Duchess’s voice died away, even in the middle of her favorite word, ‘moral,’ and the arm that was linked into hers began to tremble. Alice looked up, and there stood the Queen in front of them, with her arms folded frowning like a thunderstorm. “A fine day, your Majesty!” the Duchess began in a low, weak voice. “Now, I give you fair warning,” shouted the Queen, stamping on the ground as she spoke; “either you or your head must be off, and that in about half no time! Take your choice!” They very soon came upon a Gryphon, lying fast asleep in the sun. (If you don't know what a Gryphon is, look at the picture.)

"Up, lazy thing!" said the Queen, "and take this young lady to see the Mock Turtle, and to hear his history. I must go back and see after some executions I have ordered;" and she walked off, leaving Alice alone with the Gryphon. Alice did not quite like the look of the creature, but on the whole, she thought it would be quite as safe to say with it as to go after that savage Queen: so she waited. The Gryphon sat up and rubbed its eyes: then it watched the Queen till she was out of sight: then it chuckled. "What fun!" said the Gryphon, half to itself, half to Alice. "What is the fun?" said Alice. "Why, she," said the Gryphon.

"Everybody says 'come on!' here," thought Alice, as she went slowly after it: “I never was so ordered about before, in all my life, never!” They had not gone far before they saw the Mock Turtle in the distance, sitting sad and lonely on a little ledge of rock, and, as they came nearer, Alice could hear him sighing as if his heart would break. She pitied him deeply. "What is his sorrow?" she asked the Gryphon, and the Gryphon answered, very nearly in the same words as before, "It's all his fancy, that: he hasn’t got any sorrow, you know. Come on!"

“No” said Alice. “I don’t even know what a Mock turtle is.” “It’s the thing Mock Turtle Soup is made from,” said the Queen. “I never saw one, or heard of one,” said Alice. “Come on, then,” said the Queen, “and he shall tell you his history.” As they all walked together, Alice heard the King say in a low voice, to the company generally, “You are all pardoned.” “Come, that’s a good thing!” she said to herself, for she had felt quite unhappy at the number of executions the Queen had ordered.
