"(으)려고 " is added after the verb stem to imply speaker's motive, intention or purpose behind doing something".

VERB + ~(으)려고 하다 ~(으)려고 and ~(으)려고 하다 are used with action verbs to express a plan or intention of any individual. When expressing it in past tense ~(으)려고 하다 becomes ~(으)려고 했다.
