붕어빵에 붕어 없듯 핫도그에 개고기 들어있지 않다는 건 누구나 안다. 그런데 왜 ‘hot dog’라고 할까. 1800년대부터 dog는 소시지와 동의어로 쓰였다. We all know that a hot dog is not made of a dog and a fish-shaped bun is not made of a fish. Then, why we call it 'hot dog'? Since the 1800s, dog has been used as a synonym for sausage.

독일 일부 주민들은 개고기를 먹었는데, 소시지 만들 때 갈아 넣기도 한 데서 나온 말이라고 한다. 그들이 소시지와 닥스훈트라는 길쭉한 몸매의 개를 데리고 미국으로 이주했다. Some Germany used to eat dog meat (but not anymore), and it has been known that they used some ground dog meat when they make sausages. These folks, then, immigrated to the US with their sausage and dogs with an elongated figure called a Dachshund.

1901년 뉴욕타임스 삽화 작가가 “닥스훈트 소시지 뜨거울 때 드세요”라며 행상들이 길거리 호객 하는 모습을 보게 됐다. In 1901, a New York Times illustrator bumped into peddlers touting on the street, saying, “Eat your dachshund sausage while it is hot.”

그 장면을 풍자 만화로 전하면서 빵 사이에 소시지 대신 소시지처럼 길쭉한 닥스훈트 개 모습을 그려 넣었는데, 닥스훈트 철자를 몰라 그냥 ‘dog’이라고 쓴 것이 ‘핫도그’로 굳어졌다는 설이 있다. He illustrated satirical cartoon of the scene in which dachshund dog was put between the buns instead of sausage. And he didn't know the name of the dog. So he just wrote 'dog' and it became 'hot dog' as the theory goes.

그렇다면 햄버거는 왜 햄도 없는데 햄버거라고 부를까. 독일의 함부르크 지명에서 유래했다는 것이 지금까지의 정설이다. Then, I was wondering why we call a hamburger a hamburger when there is no ham in it. It is an established theory that it is derived from the place name of Hamburg, Germany.

18~19세기 미국으로 집단 이주하기 시작하면서 독일 음식도 유입됐는데, 그중 하나가 저민 고기를 빚어 튀긴 덩어리와 잘게 다진 양파를 달걀·빵가루와 버무린 햄버그 스테이크였다. In the 18th to 19th centuries, mass immigration from Germany to the US began to introduce German foods, one of which includes Hamburg steak made of fried patties of minced beef and chopped onions mixed with eggs and bread crumbs.

그것을 빵 두 조각 사이에 끼워 먹으면서 ‘햄버그스’ ‘햄버거스’로 줄여 부르다가 나중엔 끝의 s도 떨어져 나갔다는 것이다. They started to eat what they made between two slices of buns. Then, it was called ‘Hamburgs’ or ‘hamburgers’ but now it is called 햄버거 when the letter 's' fell off.
